Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venezuela advanced to the playoffs in the women’s softball competition of the Central American and Caribbean Games Barranquilla 2018, and tomorrow (25 July) will start to play the playoffs.
Mexico clinched the first spot in the round robin, defeting today Puerto Rico, 2-1. Puerto Rico took the lead with a solo homer by Aleshia Ocasio in the first inning, but two innings later Mexico tied the game on an RBI single by Victoria Vidales. Then, the Mexican team took the lead in the fourth with a game-winning home run by Suzannah Brookshire. Both teams had secured a place in the top two of the round robin, and played only to know which team would advance to the playoffs as the only undefeated team.
Tomorrow Mexico and Puerto Rico will play again in the playoff, with a place in the Gold Medal Game at stake. Both teams have secured a medal in the regional Games.
The other two guests to the playoffs are Cuba and Venezuela. The team from the island clinched the fourth place with a 9-0 victory over Curacao; while Venezuela eliminated host Colombia, 11-2, in the last game of the round robin.
Venezuela and Cuba will meet tomorrow in a single elimination game. The winner will clinch a medal and will play for a spot in the finale, while the loser will finish at fourth place.
Puerto Rico the only undefeated in baseball
The men’s baseball competition in Barranquilla is half-way done, and Puerto Rico leads the standings with four wins and no losses. Colombia and Cuba share the second place, with a 2-1 record, while Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela are tied in fourth place (1-2).
The round robin will finish on Sunday, 29 July.
