PANAMA CITY, Panama — Colon defeated Chiriqui, 5-2, to sweep their way to Panama’s 74th National Baseball Championship.
It was the first time in 54 years — since 1962 — that Colon captured Panama’s major baseball title.
The championship final was played at Estadio Rod Carew in front of 6,618 spectators, the Panamanian Baseball Federation (Fedebeis) reported.
Baseball, referred to as the “King of Sports” in Panama, is the Central American nation’s most popular sport. Panama’s baseball championships across youth and professional levels attract national attention.
Panama is currently No. 14 in the WBSC Baseball World Rankings and Panama’s Youth National Team will compete for the world title at the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup® 2017 in Tainan this July/August.
