TAICHUNG, Taiwan – Host Chinese Taipei knocked off Australia, 9-3, at Intercontinental Stadium Thursday night for the world No. 4’s sixth straight win at the inaugural 21U Baseball World Cup.

The win positions Chinese Taipei one step closer to contesting for the first-ever 21U world championship crown against Japan, who qualified with today’s victory over South Korea, while the loss for Australia means the Aussies can only shoot for the bronze medal.

Chinese Taipei was in control of the Super Round Robin contest from the first pitch and maintained at least a 2-run lead starting from the second inning.

Chinese Taipei ran off five unanswered runs before the Oceania representative was able to get on the scoreboard in the 8th inning, cutting Chinese Taipei’s lead to 5-3 in the top of the 8th.

The host quickly re-extended the lead in the bottom half of the 8th, jumping on Australia relief pitchers for four runs and putting the game out of reach.

With a win over Nicaragua in day 2 (Friday) of the Super Round Robin, Chinese Taipei will be guaranteed a ticket in the gold medal finale – a contest that is likely to draw 10,000+ frenzied fans to Intercontinental Stadium on Sunday.

Australia will play their second game of the Super Round Robin against the Czech Republic Friday at Taichung Stadium. The Czech Republic lost their first game of the Super Round Robin yesterday against Japan, 15-0.

A total of 11 National Teams are participating in the first ever Baseball World Cup for players 21 years of age or younger.

The 21U showcase features players representing their countries from top professional leagues, such as the Australian Baseball League (ABL), Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Mexican Baseball League (LMB) and Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
