DAVID, Panama – World No. 2 Japan earned a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 6 Chinese Taipei Thursday morning to open the Super Round of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2018 at Estadio Kenny Serracín.

Trailing the entire game, a hit batter with bases loaded, a fielder’s choice and back-to-back singles gave Japan four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chinese Taipei had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an I Li Chan sacrifice fly before Japan drew even on Asahi Hanada’s RBI single in the third. Chinese Taipei then took the lead when Ying-Chieh Mao doubled and scored on an error in the fourth.

Yu-Min Lin gave Chinese Taipei five innings of one-run baseball on the mound that included nine strikeouts before Shan-Tsung Peng took over and was tagged with the loss.

Japan reliever Shunya Honda tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and was credited with the win.

Japan improves to 2-1 in the Super Round, while Chinese Taipei falls to 1-2, as teams take their head to head records against other “Super” nations from the opening round (wins/losses against eliminated teams are not considered).

Today’s other Super Round games include No. 1 USA taking on No. 12 Dominican Republic, and host/No. 14 Panama facing No. 4 Cuba.

In the 7th-12-Place Consolation Round in Chitre, South Africa topped China, 5-3, to earn the nation’s first victory at the U-15 World Cup.
