World No. 11 New Zealand announced 21 players to start training for the XVI WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship, to be held in Chiba, Japan, from 2-12 August. The White Sox is in the process of selecting the final team that will play in Chiba, and will cut four players in early June to fill the 17-maximum world tournament roster.

Head coach Kevin Gettins feels it will be good for his team to maintain the internal competition a bit longer, to keep everyone striving for selection. That’s why he decided to name 21 players making the best effort to be in the final roster.

The White Sox squad features nine American-based players, including four of the six pitchers. Gettins expects the White Sox to take five pitchers in the 17-strong world championships squad.

The WBSC announced a few days ago the qualification road to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. New Zealand will have two chances to earn a spot in Tokyo. The first one, in the World Championship in Chiba, where the champion will secure a direct entry to the Olympics; and the last one, through an Asia/Oceania Qualifier, on a date to be determined, with one spot available for the best team in the tournament.
