Japan has won six of the last seven editions, Korea claimed gold in 2015. The top two National Teams of the eight-team tournament will earn a spot in the final Olympic Qualifier, scheduled on April 2020

The Asia Baseball Championship took off on Monday, 14 October, in Taichung, Chinese Taipei.

China began action in group B with a 4-3 win in ten innings against Korea. Shortstop Yang Jin had a three-hit game, that included a double and a home run, and batted in three runs. Zhang Tao pitched three innings as a reliever and earned the win.
The Philippines defeated Pakistan, 11-0, in the other game scheduled in group B.

The game between the defending champions Japan and Sri Lanka in group A was delayed because of the weather to Thursday, 17 October. In the other game of group A, the hosts Chinese Taipei defeated 17-2, Hong Kong China.

The top two teams of each group will advance to the four-team super round, scheduled on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 October. The top two teams of the super round, excluding Japan, will earn a spot in the final Olympic Qualifier, scheduled on April 2020 in Taipei City.

Japan won six of the last seven editions of the Asian Baseball Championship. Korea earned the Continental Title in 2015.
