The WBSC Softball Hall of Famer will lead the Junior Black Sox at the WBSC U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup 2022.

Former Black Sox captain and WBSC Softball Hall of Famer Jarrad Martin is the new head coach of the New Zealand U-18 Men’s Softball National Team. Martin, who served as the assistant coach under Thomas Makea since 2014, will guide New Zealand at the 2022 U-18 World Cup.

Martin is one of the most decorated men’s softball players in history. A four-time WBSC world champion (1996, 2000, 2004 and 2013) who captained the Black Sox's winning team in 2004, he was inducted into the WBSC Softball Hall of Fame in 2017. He also pitched in the Junior Men’s Softball World Championship 1989, the last New Zealand team to win a gold medal at youth level. He played in 113 international games for the Black Sox.

The 47-year old former infielder served as a coach of the Junior Black Sox through four campaigns, helping New Zealand to capture two silvers (2014 and 2016) and a bronze medal (2018). They finished in fifth place at the WBSC 2020 U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to be able to coach this next wave of young athletes through to the 2022 World Cup,” said Martin.

“It is about doing what we need to do to bring out the best in every athlete who is eligible for selection over the next two years.

“For me it is about the players/kids. I've achieved my dreams in our sport and now it is time for these kids to achieve theirs.”
