David Robertson set to return to MLB after earning Olympic silver medal with USA

The right-hander earned two saves for the US at the Tokyo Olympics. He last appeared in an MLB game in 2019.

The Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB) agreed to terms with David Robertson, one of the key members of the silver medal USA bullpen at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The right-hander appeared in three games, pitching three innings and earning two saves, against Korea on 31 July and against the Dominican Republic on 4 August. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning against Japan on 2 August.

Robertson, 36, has 12 MLB seasons under his belt, in which he registered 53 wins, 33 losses and 137 saves. His career earned run average (ERA) is 2.90.

He last appeared with an MLB club pitching in seven games for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2019 season. He missed the whole 2020 season after undergoing surgery on his pitching elbow and was a free agent when USA Baseball selected him as part of the US Olympic Team. He previously helped the US win the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Robertson will begin his 2021 season pitching for the Durham Bulls at the Triple-A level.
