Cuba’s unbeaten run to win the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup maiden edition was guided by Briandy Molina arguably the best Baseball5 player in the world.

Before the inaugural WBSC Baseball5 World Cup 2022 started at El Zocalo in Mexico City on Monday, Cuba was considered the principal candidate to win the title and Briandy Molina the best player in the world. It’s fair to say that Cuba and Briandy met the expectations that were put on them.

The 27-year-old led his team to an impressive undefeated run to the title with impressive power in the hitter's box, great agility on defence from centre field and impressive speed and guile around the bases. He was unanimously voted as one of two WBSC Baseball5 World Cup MVPs, alongside Japan's Ayako Rokkaku, for his impressive leadership and motivational presence and trailblazing skill set, with Orlando Armador his trusty lieutenant.

“For us, this is pretty important since we are the pioneers of this discipline and take it around the world," said Briandy referring to winning the title and the MVP award with his Cuban team mates. "There’s nothing better than winning the Baseball5 World Cup”.

Having been the pin up boy of Baseball5 around the world, Briandy was emotional thinking about his personal journey to the top of the podium in a tournament which is now expected to take the globalisation of the sport to a new level. “This tournament was the most amazing thing I have ever been a part of. The fans have been terrific all week in what was a beautiful venue. I’m so happy to win this tournament.”

“For me, this is the most important moment of my life. I’ve been dreaming about it, suffering and pushing myself as a player and coach supporting my team and thank God we are seeing this victory".
