Historía

The sport of Baseball began in May of 2007 with the formation of the Reykjavik Baseball and Softball Club by a group of baseball enthusiasts. After baseball was officially recognized by the Icelandic Sports and Olympic Association that same year, the club was also accepted by the Reykjavik Sports Council as a fully pledged member. In the Fall of 2007, the Confederation of European Baseball worked with the Reykjavik Baseball and Softball Club to help increase baseball participation in Iceland. On June 3, 2008, CEB Representatives, Gijs Selderijk and Charles van der Meijs arrived in Iceland to conduct a 4 day Promoter´s course that was very well received. In the ensuing months, the club held summer practices for anyone interested, and conducted a school introduction program reaching out to many schools in the Greater Reykjavik area. Many youngsters showed interest in baseball and indoor practices began in January 2009. The CEB continued their support with the Reykjavik club and invited them to the CEB Annual General Meeting in San Marino that year. After configuring a plan to improve the level of those participants in Iceland, the CEB offered to send a Development Coach to work the Icelandic players during the summer of 2009. Coach Patrick Pace arrived in late May and started to work with young coaches and a few local elementary schools as well as conducting afternoon and evening baseball practices and workshops in several different towns in Iceland. His visit proved to be a great boost for baseball in Iceland and improved the level of baseball playing to new heights. Since the summer of 2009, Baseball has been played introduced and played in several towns in Iceland and an increase in coache´s education through the Icelandic Sports & Olympic Association has elevated the level baseball is played in Iceland today. There is currently one baseball club in Iceland - the Reykjavik Baseball and Softball Club, with 170 members in total. Baseball practices are held all year round and school introduction program remain a priority for the promotion of the sport.
