TAICHUNG, Taiwan – South Korea – currently the No. 8 ranked baseball nation in the world — defeated No. 28 Nicaragua, 9-2, Thursday night at Taichung Stadium in the first day of the exciting semifinal stage – the Super Round Robin – of the inaugural 21U Baseball World Cup.

TAICHUNG, Taiwan – South Korea – currently the No. 8 ranked baseball nation in the world — defeated No. 28 Nicaragua, 9-2, Thursday night at Taichung Stadium in the first day of the exciting semifinal stage – the Super Round Robin – of the inaugural 21U Baseball World Cup.

Nicaragua and South Korea were locked in a 2-2 tie through the first five innings, before South Korea sailed away, scoring seven unanswered runs following an initially strong performance by Nicaragua starter Gerald Rojas, who went 5 1/3 innings.

South Korea used a collection of four pitchers to close out the game and shut out Nicaragua in eight of the nine innings.

South Korea was led by Dohyun Kim, who went 4-for-5 and boosted his batting average to .478 in the 21U Baseball World Cup – the fifth highest.

South Korea now 2-1 in the Super Round Robin (5-1 overall) and Japan (3-0; 5-0 overall) will face each other today in a pivotal match of the Super Round Robin. Japan KO’d the Czech Republiclast night, 15-0.

The match versus Japan will be a must-win situation for South Korea, if the world No. 8 is to remain in gold medal contention.
