Australia names coaching staff for WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2016

Baseball Australia, the national governing body, announced its National Team coaching staff for the upcoming WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2017, set to take place from 28 Oct. to 6 Nov. in Monterrey, Mexico.

SYDNEY — Baseball Australia, the national governing body, announced its National Team coaching staff for the upcoming WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2016, set to take place from 28 October to 6 November in Monterrey, Mexico.

Tony Harris will lead Australia’s World Cup team, along with bench coach Jon Deeble and pitching coach/former MLB pitcher Luke Prokopec.  Sydney Blue Sox (Australian Baseball League) manager Jason Pospishil will also serve on Australia’s coaching staff.

One of the staff’s first order of business will be to compile a list of the top Aussie players (born 1993 – 1998) to fill out the 24-man roster and compete For the Title of World Champion in Monterrey.

“Our performance at the U-23 Baseball World Cup is critical for our World Ranking,” said Baseball Australia Head of High Performance Glenn Williams.  “We’re looking forward to seeing how the team executes.”

The current world No. 13 will open the U-23 Baseball World Cup in Group B, with world No. 1 Japan, No. 4 Chinese Taipei, No. 18 Nicaragua, No. 27 Argentina and No. 33 Austria.  The top three nations from each group will advance to the Super Round group stage.

Australia finished in 6th Place at the U-21 Baseball World Cup 2014 in Taichung, Taiwan.  (The U-21 category has since been expanded to the new U-23 category.)
