Hurricane Maria will cost Puerto Rico at least $30 billion in damage and, according to Adam Kenins, a senior economist at Moody’s, the island’s economy may be set back decades. Still, it won’t stop the 80th season of the baseball winter league.

The season of the Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente opened on Friday, 5 January with a double header in the western city of Mayaguez: Santurce-Carolina (final score was 9-4) and Caguas-Mayaguez (3-8).
The regular season will consist of 18 games, instead of the usual 40. Puerto Rico will be able to send a team to the Caribbean World Series (2-8 February, Guadalajara, Mexico).

Mayaguez ‘Isidoro Garcia’ stadium is one of the 2 on the island that can host games, but the main entrance will be inaccessible: it’s being used as a  Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster assistance center.

The only other available ballpark is ‘Hiram Bithorn’ Stadium in San Juan, that will host only day games.
Electric power is one of the main issues in Puerto Rico after the devastation from Hurricane Maria. Large portions of the island remain without power.

Puerto Rico native pop star and actress Jennifer Lopez travelled to the island together with her partner, former Major League Baseball (MLB) superstar Alex Rodriguez. The couple announced the launch of the Puerto Rico Federally Qualified Health Centers Disaster Recovery Fund, an effort to boost the work of health centers that provide accessible healthcare to underserved communities.
