The 2017 World Series (that will crown either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Houston Astros after a game 7) have been memorable in many ways but 7 year old Hailey Dawson will remember game 4 above the rest. On Saturday, 28 October she performed the ceremonial first pitch in Houston.
It would be considered an accomplishment by any baseball fan, but for Hailey it was something really special, since she was born without 3 fingers on her throwing hand. Brendan O’Toole and the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada used a 3D printer to build for her a robotic hand at a cost her family could afford.
Superstar pitcher Justin Verlander presented Hailey with a pair of brand new cleats and American League batting champion José Altuve performed catching duties for her ceremonial firtst pitch.
Hailey Dawson is not done. Her wish is to perform a ceremonial first pitch in each of the 30 Major League Baseball ballparks.
