MANAQUA, Nicaragua — Panama defeated the Dominican Republic, 2-1, in the final of the U-12 Pan American Baseball Championship 2017 to capture the Americas title and return home to national media attention in Panama.
The gold medal game was a close one. Dominican Republic got on the scoreboard first in the second against starter Anthony Gonzalez, but was given no chance as reliever Adan Sanchez took the mound.
On the mound, Sanchez, one of the top performers at the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup this summer, struck out 11 of the 14 batters he faced en route to earning the win. Sanchez also had a RBI single in the final and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP). Dimas Oda scored both runs for Panama.
In the bronze medal game, Nicaragua outscored Brasil, 14-0. Diego Collado, Jarold Montealto, Lester Lopez and Carlos Torrentes all had multi hit games (the total for Nicaragua was up to 14). Starter Tito Martinez earmed the win. Samuel Nogueira gor Brasil’s only hit.
