Belize Bank Bulldogs repeat as Women’s Softball National Champions

The 26th Belize Women’s Softball National Championship saw the Belize Bank Bulldogs defeat the BTL team, 9-2, in six innings to capture their third straight women’s title.

BELIZE CITY (Belize) — The 26th Belize Women’s Softball National Championship saw the Belize Bank Bulldogs defeat the BTL team, 9-2, in six innings to capture their third straight women’s title.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The title game was close with lead changes at each at-bat through the first two innings. BTL scored the first run of the game when its lead-off hitter, Lydia Cacho, opened the game with an infield single and was batted in by Noricia Frazier on a fielder’s choice to second base.

In the bottom of the second inning, the budding champions tied the score at 1-1 when shortstop Sherette Vernon opened the inning with a single to centre field and later scored on a wild pitch.

BTL scored its second run of the game in the top of the third inning when Cacho doubled to left field and scored again on a fielder’s choice.

In the bottom of the third inning, the offence of the Belize Bank Bulldogs ripped into the pitching of BTL’s starter Kimani Smith for five runs on five hits before she departed in favour of BTL’s ace Mary Flowers.

Flowers, in relief pitching, gave up three runs on two hits in her two innings of work.

On the line for the Belize Bank Bulldogs was 9 runs 9 hits. The winning pitcher was Ashley Lucas who gave up two runs on five hits while striking out two batters. The losing pitcher was Kimani Smith.

At the end of the championship, Mr. Edison Parks 2nd Vice President of the Belize Softball Federation presented the championship medals and awards.
