Canada and New Zealand to meet in Bronze Medal game, Japan advances to Gold Medal game at Jr. Men’s Softball World Championship

MIDLAND, MI, USA — Canada and New Zealand will meet tomorrow, 30 July, in the bronze medal match of the 2016 WBSC Jr Men’s Softball World Championship. The winner will then face Japan in the world championship gold medal game, whereas the loser will be awarded the bronze.

MIDLAND, MI, USA — Canada and New Zealand will meet tomorrow, 30 July, in the bronze medal match of the 2016 WBSC Jr Men’s Softball World Championship. The winner will then face Japan in the world championship gold medal game, whereas the loser will be awarded the bronze.

Sunday will crown the world champion after 50 games of tournament play, which began on 24 July with twelve U-19 youth national teams from around the globe.

ROAD TO THE FINALS

Canada (6-2) finished in third place in Pool B during the round robin pool play. They then defeated Czech Republic 2-1, United States 6-2, and Argentina 5-1 to advance to the bronze medal game.

New Zealand (5-2) finished in second place in Pool B during the round robin pool play. They then defeated Argentina 4-3, but lost to Japan 3-0 to advance to the bronze medal game.

Japan (7-0) has not lost yet in this edition of the Junior Men’s World Championship and finished atop in Pool B during the round robin pool play. They defeated the United States 5-2 and New Zealand 3-0 to advance directly to the gold medal game. They will now await the winner of the bronze medal game.

PLACEMENT ROUND FINALS

The African nations of Botswana and South Africa will compete in the finals of the placement round tomorrow at 16:00 to determine ninth and tenth place. Both countries made their last junior men’s world championship appearance in 2008 in Whitehorse, Canada, finishing in 12th and 9th place respectively.

Botswana finished pool play in fifth place in Pool A. In the placement round playoffs, they defeated Israel 3-0 to advance to the placement finals.

South Africa finished pool play also in fifth place but in Pool B. In the placement round playoffs, they defeated Denmark 1-0 to advance to the placement finals.
