Dominican Republic shuts out Venezuela 3-0 in World Baseball Classic

SAN DIEGO – Gregory Polanco’s solo home run in the 5th inning broke up a scoreless tie and helped defending champs Dominican Republic defeat Venezuela, 3-0, in second-round action at Petco Park.

SAN DIEGO – Gregory Polanco’s solo home run in the 5th inning broke up a scoreless tie and helped defending champs Dominican Republic defeat Venezuela, 3-0, in second-round action at Petco Park.

Nelson Cruz added a solo home run in the 8th as six Dominican Republic pitchers combined on the shutout victory.

The win puts Dominican Republic (1-1) in the middle of the race to advance to the semi-finals, while Venezuela (0-2) must win its final game and hope for a three-team tie for 2nd Place.

Puerto Rico (1-0) and the United States (1-0) play tonight, with the winner to be in prime position to advance to the semi-finals.
