MEXICO CITY – The Mexican Baseball League (LMB) — the country’s top-tier, Triple-A professional league — announced that “for the first time in history” at least one woman will be umpiring LMB games, starting with the 2018 season.
LMB revealed two candidates, Paulina Barajas, 34, and Luz Gordoa, 41, who completed the LMB Academy and also worked LMB Rookie League games.
In hopes of and in preparation for the historic debut next season, the two candidates will make their umpiring debuts this month in the Mexican Winter League (LIM) – a league to develop young players.
The LMB, led by President Javier Salinas, said the league “will announce further actions that help the development and inclusion of women, and reiterates the league’s firm commitment to offer an inclusive show, aimed at the improvement of society.”
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), which recently signed the IWG Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration on Women and Sport, posted a tweet of great praise for LMB’s announcement, which was retweeted by the LMB and President Salinas.
