European Baseball Club Champions Cup set to open in Germany

REGENSBURG, Germany — The annual Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) Club Champions Cup will begin on Wednesday (7 June) at Regensburg’s Armin Wolf Arena.  Defending champions L&D Amsterdam (Dutch League) and T&A San Marino of the Italian Baseball League (IBL) will open the Champions League style tournament.

The European Baseball Club Champions Cup is an eight-team club tournament, with five domestic leagues represented. The eight teams are divided into two groups of four, and the top two clubs from each group will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, with the finals on Sunday.

2016 IBL champs Fortitudo Bologna and Dutch league champs Netpunus Rotterdam will play the first match of Group A, that features also German league champions Mainz Athletics and French league champions Rouen Huskies.

San Marino and Amsterdam compete in Group B, together with IBL’s Rimini Pirates and German club Legionaere.

A team from the Dutch Hoofdsklasse or the IBL has won the event since 1967.

Finishing in last place will eliminate the associated league from the 2018 edition, while league champions from Belarus, Czech Republic, Croatia, France, Switzerland and Ukraine will battle each other this year in the qualifier for the one open slot.
