For the first time in the history of official fast pitch softball and baseball competitions in Europe, a British team took home the Gold in a European Championship as Great Britain wins the 2016 European Junior Women’s Softball Championship with a 1-0 win over Italy.

SANT BOI (Spain) — For the first time in the history of official fast pitch softball and baseball competitions in Europe, a British team took home the Gold in a European Championship.

Great Britain is without any doubt the best slow pitch nation in Europe, having won all the Slow Pitch European Championships. But no British National Team has ever won a single official European Championship in fast pitch softball or baseball until now as Great Britain wins the 2016 European Junior Women’s Softball Championship with a 1-0 win over Italy.

Championship Game

The final game between Great Britain and Italy was a scoreless game until the very end. Coming into the bottom of the seventh, Great Britain’s first batter reached base on a walk. An error and a hit allowed Great Britain to score the game’s only run.

Game of the Tournament

Great Britain was forced to come from behind against the Czech Republic in the semi-final game. The Czechs started off strong and scored six runs in the first two innings. But Great Britain came back to score twice in the bottom of the second and three more runs in the fifth. The drama climaxed in the bottom of the seventh, when the Czech pitchers couldn’t hold the British batters back anymore and Great Britain advanced to the final thanks to a number of timely hits.
