Guatemala sweep first round of National Sports Games for Softball

GUATEMALA CITY – More than 170 male and female softball youth athletes from six regions of the country – Jutiapa, Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez, Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango and Guatemala – are participating.

GUATEMALA CITY – The first round of the Guatemala National Sports Games for softball has concluded. More than 170 male and female softball youth athletes from six regions of the country – Jutiapa, Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez, Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango and Guatemala – are participating.

During Opening Ceremonies at the Diamante Carlos Larrañaga Gomar National Stadium, Héctor Sazo, president of the Guatemala Softball Association, took the opportunity to deliver 20 donated softball starter kits to the regional associations.

The WBSC donated the kits, worth over US$25,000, with each kit containing enough equipment for two teams to immediately play a game.

Guatemala sweep first round

In both the men’s and women’s divisions, the Guatemala region leads Jutiapa, Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez, Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango.

In the men’s category, Guatemala (10-0) is undefeated, with Quetzaltenango in second, followed by Huehuetenango, Suchitepéquez, Jutiapa and Retalhuleu. Huehuetenango is the reigning champion.

In the women’s category, Guatemala (8-0) – looking to repeat last year’s title – is also unbeaten, with Suchitepéquez in second, followed by Huehuetenango, Quetzaltenango and Retalhuleu.

The second phase is scheduled from 16-19 August in Guatemala City and the Final will be from 7-12 November in Quetzaltenango.

The Central-American nation is currently ranked No. 18 for men and No. 20 for women in the WBSC Softball World Rankings.
