Italy defeats France in Final to win U-12 Euro Baseball Championship

UTRECHT, The Netherlands-Italy defeated (12-1) France in the final and claimed 2017 Baseball U-12 European Title.

ULTRECHT, Netherlands — Italy has become the new baseball champion of Europe in the U-12 category.

Italy won the 2017 U-12 Baseball European Championship outscoring France (12-1) in the gold medal game.

Felluga and Gonzato limited France to 1 unearned run, while their offense got to french starter Blancot scoring 2 runs in the first at bat. Catcher Casadio and shortstop Wong both had 3 runs batted in for Italy, while first baseman Taschin went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs.

The key game for Italy was the last in pool play. After outscoring 48-0 Poland, Ukraine and Russia, the Azzurrini needed a walk off base hit by pinch hitter Carima to beat (7-6) Czech Republic and earn a final berth.

Czech Republic then beat (8-2) Germany and claimed third place. The host Netherlands finished fifth.

The U-12 Euro 2018 will serve as a qualifier for the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup 2019 in Tainan, Taiwan.
