Oceania: Unranked Guam tops No. 11 Australia to open U-12 Baseball World Cup qualifier

The youth National Team of Guam defeated world No. 11 Australia, 11-5, on the opening day of the inaugural U-12 Oceania Baseball Championship at Haganta’s Guerrero Field.

HAGATNA, Guam — The youth National Team of Guam defeated world No. 11 Australia, 11-5, on the opening day of the inaugural U-12 Oceania Baseball Championship at Hagatna’s Guerrero Field.

The unranked host nation’s victory made the featured headlines in the sports-section and social media of the national newspaper.

Australia played two games on Day 1, defeating America Samoa, 15-0.

The Oceania champion of the double-elimination tournament will go on to compete for the world title at the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup 2017 — the highest level of baseball for 12-year-old players — in Tainan, Taiwan, this July/August.
