Playoffs set for South American Women’s Championship in Cartagena

CARTAGENA – Brazil finished in the top spot and undefeated after the completion of the triple round robin of the 2016 South American Women’s Softball Championship, after defeating Panama 17-0 in the first game of the day.

Brazil continued their winning streak to end the day with a shut-out over Colombia 5-0, scoring all their runs in the fifth inning. Veronika Fukunishi went the distance with a grand-slam.

Argentina has claimed the third and final playoff spot in the 2016 South American regional championship, following their win over Panama.

In the closest match of the day, Colombia defeated Argentina, 2-1. The Argentine national team took the early lead with a solo home run by Natalia Jimenez in the first inning. But the hosts managed to turn the game around.

The biggest threat of the game came in the sixth inning when Colombia loaded the bases for the third time in the game. An untimely walk allowed Colombia to tie the game.

Colombia took the decisive lead in the seventh after loading the bases once again. A defensive error allowed the winning run to score.

Argentina 15-year-old phenom pitcher, Candela Solé, had a great performance despite receiving the loss for the game.

Colombia finished in second place and will face Argentina. The winner will advance to play Brazil in the Final.
