U-23 Baseball World Cup: No. 1 Japan, No. 13 Australia to battle For the Title of World Champion

After two rounds and 48 games of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2016, two countries have earned the right to play For the Title of World Champion, as No. 1 Japan will meet No. 13 Australia on Sunday (6:00pm) in the world championship final.

MONTERREY, Mexico — After two rounds and 48 games of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2016, two countries have earned the right to play For the Title of World Champion in the U-23 category, as No. 1 Japan will meet No. 13 Australia on Sunday (6:00pm) in the world championship final.

Japan defeated No. 8 Mexico Saturday night to qualify for the gold medal game, which also confirmed Australia’s ticket into the Final after they beat No. 15 Panama earlier in the day.

No. 3 Korea defeated Nicaragua and will face Panama on Sunday in the Bronze Medal Final at 12:00pm.

Representatives from three continents – Americas, Asia and Oceania – will have a medal opportunity in Sunday’s Finals, which will be live-streamed at youtube.com/wbsc.

Japan 3, Mexico 2

An throwing error on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 9th inning allowed Tomo Otosaka to score the game-winning run against the host nation.

An error proved costly for Mexico in the 5th, as two runs scored when Taishi Hirooka’s ball was misplayed by Mexico third baseman Luis Fernando Medina Ponce.

Mexico answered back with the two runs in the 7th courtesy of Carlos Andres Diaz Chavez two out, two run homer.

The game featured a pair of strong pitching performances as Japan’s Daiki Aoyama worked seven innings and struck out nine, while Mexico’s Samuel Zazueta Molina tossed eight innings and had six strikeouts.

Zazuata took the loss, while Junki Kishimoto recorded the win.

Korea 13, Nicaragua 8

A wild back-and-forth affair saw Korea score six runs in the 5th inning and eventually come away with a 13-8 win over No. 18 Nicaragua (1-4).

The 6-run inning was highlighted by a 3-run home run off the bat of Byeong-Wuk Lim who finished 2-for-5 with four RBI.

Nicaragua received home runs from Benjamin Jordin Alegria and Cesar Javier Diaz Molina.  Diaz finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Chaehueng Choi picked up the win after pitching 6.2 innings in relief, while Jesus Garrido suffered the loss.

In the Consolation Round, No. 27 Argentina stunned No. 14 Czech Republic, 9-2, while No. 36 South Africa defeated No. 33 Austria, 9-3.
