Venezuela National Women’s Baseball Championship to serve selection of World Cup team

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuela’s 10-team National Women´s Baseball Championship will be staged from 18-23 June in the capital.

Venezuela’s premier competition in women’s baseball is being organised under the support of the Venezuela’s Ministry for Youth and Sports, National Sports Institute and Olympic Committee, and the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). The Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV) will include the women’s baseball showcase as part of its Olympic Festival.

The national championship will be held at Estadio Daniel Chino Canónico in Caracas, which is considered one of the best baseball complexes in the country for youth and women.

The competition will help the Venezuelan Baseball Federation (FVB) to identify the nation’s top female baseball players ahead of the LG Presents WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2016 in Gijang, Korea, in September.  FVB will also name its National Team manager at the conclusion of the event in Caracas. Venezuela finished sixth at the Women’s Baseball World Cup 2014 in Miyazaki, Japan.

FVB leaders said they will assemble the best World Cup team to represent Venezuela.

Venezuela will begin the 12-nation Women’s Baseball World Cup 2016 in Group A, along with host South Korea, Cuba and Pakistan.

“We are in a good Group. We have many chances to advance to the second round and challenge the powers of the planet,” said FVB President Edwin Zerpa.
