NEW YORK — Four players who represented their country at previous WBSC Baseball World Cups were selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft, including No. 1 overall selection, Royce Lewis, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins.

NEW YORK — Four players who represented their country at previous WBSC Baseball World Cups were selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft, including No. 1 overall selection Royce Lewis, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins.

Lewis represented the United States in 2014 at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup in Sinaloa, Mexico, where he helped his team to a silver medal, hitting .462 (12-for-26) in ten tournament games.

U-18 Baseball World Cup stars continue to shine in MLB Draft

Two players who helped USA capture the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2015 world championship in Osaka, Japan, followed Lewis in the first round. Hunter Greene, a two-way high school star was the second player selected in the draft (Cincinnati Reds). U-18 World Cup 2015 MVP Nick Pratto was the 14th player selected (Kansas City Royals). Also from USA’s world championship team in Osaka, Mickey Moniak was the first player selected in 2016 MLB Draft.

Adam Haseley (WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2013) was selected eighth overall by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Two Canadians were also taken on the first day of the draft that featured the top 75 selections. Right-handed pitcher Landon Leach was the first player taken in the second round, 37th overall by the Minnesota Twins, and U-18 Baseball World Cup 2015 participant Adam Hall went to the Baltimore Orioles in the second round with the 60th overall selection.

Both Hall and Leach are eligible to represent Canada at the upcoming WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Thunder Bay, Canada, from September 1 to 10.
