Women’s Baseball World Cup: Canada defeats Chinese Taipei to earn place in Final

The Canadian Women’s National Baseball Team defeated Chinese Taipei, 2-1, Saturday at Hyundai-Gijang Dream Ballpark to advance to the world championship final of the LG Presents WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2016.

GIJANG, Korea – The Canadian Women’s National Baseball Team defeated Chinese Taipei, 2-1, Saturday at Hyundai-Gijang Dream Ballpark to advance to the world championship final of the LG Presents WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2016. Following Japan’s clinching of the top spot in the Super Round standings on Day 6 Friday night, Canada claimed the second ticket into the pinnacle contest For the Title of World Champion in women’s baseball on Day 7 – the final day of the Super Round — behind Amanda Asay’s complete-game performance in which she had eight strikeouts. Canada’s infield made three diving plays, which shut down Chinese Taipei’s scoring opportunities. Commenting on the run to the final in Gijang, “It feels great to be back in the gold medal game,” he said. “It’s been a long time and it’s not every day that you get to play for a world championship. Canada’s first and last time in the World Cup final resulted in an 11-3 loss to Japan in 2008.  Japan will go into the finale with a 20-game World Cup win-streak and perfect 7-0 record in Gijang, including an 8-2 victory over Canada on Day 1 of the Women’s Baseball World Cup 2016. Despite the loss for Chinese Taipei, the end result in Gijang will be the highest ever finish at the women’s world championship.
