Venezuela came back from a 0-5 deficit to down Cuba 9-6 at John Fry Park on Saturday afternoon. They now will face Chinese Taipei on Sunday in the game for fifth place at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. Cuba has to settle for the seventh place encounter against the Netherlands.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, Cuba broke the tie with a five-run rally in the top of the fourth. Yuleidys Charon got them on the board with a RBI double. She later would score also the second run on an error. Dayanna Batista and Yurismaris Baez followed with a RBI single and a two-run double to make it 5-0.

However Venezuela woke up and countered right away. RBI singles by Yusneir Rodriguez and Leonela Reyes ended the shutout. Kelyn Mendoza tied the game with a bases clearing double and would later score on a single by Daniela Daniel to cap the six-run rally. Three insurance runs in the fifth, again also thanks to two more RBI by Mendoza, sealed the deal. Cuba would score one more time in the seventh, but failed to erase the deficit.
