Panama was crowned U-19 Women’s Softball Central American champions, defeating host Guatemala, 6-4, in the finale of the event. Five teams competed in the Carlos Cano field, in Guatemala City: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama. The event was broadcasted by Radio La Red and La Red TV.
After a perfect round robin, Panama had to play three games in a row to claim the title, after being shut out by Guatemala in the first game of the page playoffs, by a score of 5-0. However, the Panamanian squad recovered fast with back-to-back wins to finally claim the title. In the second semifinal, they beat El Salvador, 4-1, to set up a rematch with the home team for the Central American title.
Panama jumped ahead early in the game, with a pair of runs in the first, second and fourth innings, to take a decisive 6-0 lead. Guatemala answered with two in the bottom of the fourth, and another pair in the sixth, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Winning pitcher Estrella Gonzalez worked 2 innings in relief, while Ximena Rivera was charged with the loss in a complete game effort.
