CARACAS, Venezuela — Players on Venezuela’s U-10 National Team were in tears the last few days, as their flight plans to Reynosa, Mexico, didn’t’ materialize, preventing them from competing in the U-10 Pan Am Baseball Championship 2017, which began on Friday, 27 September.

Then Major League Baseball/Detroit Tigers superstar and Venezuela National Team first baseman/DH Miguel Cabrera stepped up to the plate. Through social media, Cabrera was made aware that the U-10 Venezuela squad was unable to secure flight tickets, and made arrangements to have the team on the next possible flight to the U-10 Pan Am Championship.

Thanks to hero “Miggy”, the Venezuelan U-10 National Team is currently en route to the Pan Am Championship, by way of Caracas – Panama City – Mexico City – Reynosa.

Prior to boarding their flight at the Caracas airport, the young players Tweeted a video thanking Cabrera, which Miggy Retweeted.

Officials from the Venezuelan Baseball Federation said: “The federation is very grateful to Miguel Cabrera — a baseball hero on and off the field — for his valuable support in helping realize the dreams of our kids.”

Competing teams are awaiting a final decision of WBSC’s Americas arm — the Pan American Baseball Confederation (COPABE) — on the revised tournament schedule/standings, and whether Venezuela will have to forfeit any past games.
