The tail of the Lingling Typhoon caused a thunderstorm in the early morning of Saturday, 7 September. The WBSC Technical Commission was thus forced to make changes to the schedule of placement round Day 3. The Technical Commission decided to play on seven innings the last three games of the placement round of the U-18 Baseball World Cup. Batting practice, infield practice and pre-game ceremony have been cancelled for the games scheduled on Saturday, 7 September.
Game # 48 South Africa-Netherlands is postponed to Sunday, 8 September and will begin at 10 am.

The standings are pretty much set, even if one game has yet to be played. The Netherlands will finish seventh and Spain will be eighth, thanks to the win against Panama during group play. Here’s a full recap of the two games played during the third day of the placement round.

Spain defeated Nicaragua, 7-2.

The game was a pitching duel between Nicaragua’s Samuel Mendoza and Spain’s Frank Hernandez, who kept it tied at zero until the end of the fourth.

Spain broke the score open in the bottom of the fifth against Cristopher Osorio. Ruben Fernandez and Juan Gonzalez hit back to back bases-loaded singles and batted in three runs. Franck Hernandez helped himself with a two-RBI single.

Nicaragua got to reliever Justin Luna in the top of the sixth with a two-run double by Enmanuel Aburto.
Juan Gonzalez homered in the bottom half of the frame off Lesther Medrano to take back the two runs.

Panama defeated China, 3-1, to earn the third win in the placement round and secure ninth place.
Panama scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Yi Jian, who suffered the loss. Julio Gonzalez led off the frame with a double and scored on a base hit by Danilo Abrego.Benyamin Quintanar punished a defensive error with a two-RBI single.

Jonathan Amaya allowed an unearned run over five innings of work. China didn’t get a hit but reached four times on walks. Amaya outdueled China’s starter Zhao Wei, who limited Panama to three hits in five innings. Reliever Abel Reyes earned the win getting the last 6 outs.
