This is a full Day 2 recap. In the history of the U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup, the day will be remembered as August 11 Marathon.
Four National Teams have already qualified for the super round, that will start Tuesday, 13 August: USA, Japan, Puerto Rico and Canada. See the standings.
Japan outscored Australia, 8-1 in 5 innings, and won the first big match of the U-19 Women’s Softball
World Cup. Starting pitcher Miu Goto gave no-chance to Aussie line-up and left fielder Chiharu Shiharashi got two hits and scored three runs.
Earlier in the day, Japan had used the same score, 8-1, to beat South Africa.
Italy used 11 hits and thrived on four defensive mistakes to defeat South Africa, 10-0 in four innings. Center fielder Susanna Soldi went 3 for 3 with two doubles.
Alexia Lacatena went the distance to earn the win.
We turn now to Group A.
Mexico made a huge step towards the super round with a 1-0 win against a brave Czech Republic. A home run by first baseman Saleen Donohoe won the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Desiree Hernandez earned the win going the distance and striking out nine, without allowing a walk.
The USA needed only three innings to outscore Botswana, 15-0.
This is what happened in Group D.
Canada beat the Netherlands, 2-0, playing perfect defence behind some brilliant pitching by Samantha Ryan, who went the distance allowing only two hits and three walks. Canada outhit, 6-2, the Dutch and also prevailed in the running game.
Canada went on to defeat later in the day Chinese Taipei, 7-0.
Chinese Taipei had begun the tournament with a late-inning come from behind win over New Zealand, 7-6. The team from Oceania took the lead three times in the game, and was only one out away from victory, but couldn’t hold the lead.
New Zealand remained in the race for a spot in the super round with a 7-0 win against the Netherlands.
Brooke Glassie went the distance, allowing only two hits and three walks. New Zealand had nine hits against four Dutch pitchers, including a home run by first baseman Pallas Potter.
We get now to group C games.
China scored seven in the bottom of the fifth to beat, 8-3, Ireland. The absolute beginners of the U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup entered the frame with a two-run lead, but couldn’t stick to it because of a couple of questionable defensive plays.
Later in the day Brazil defeated, 7-1, and eliminated Ireland from the super round race.
Thais Suzawa threw a complete game, allowing only one hit and striking out eight.
Puerto Rico defeated China, 5-3, to earn the second win in the tournament.
Puerto Rico offence combined ten hits against three Chinese pitchers, with right fielder Ariella Jackson starring at 3 for 3.
Macey Cintron pitched 4.2 innings and earned the win.
