MONTERREY, Mexico – World No. 1 Japan narrowly beat No. 3 Korea in 10 innings Thursday night to remain the only undefeated nation at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup® 2016, while in Saltillo, No. 8 Mexico defeated No. 13 Australia to conclude the first day of the Super Round.

Japan 2, Korea 1

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning, a deep fly ball off the bat of Tomo Otosaka allowed Ryotato Yoshumochi to score the winning run and give Japan a 2-1 walk-off win over Korea.

Japan and Korea both were powered by solo home runs: Korea’s JUNG Hyun Jung hit one in the 5th, while Yusuke Masgao responded with a solo shot to tie the game in the 7th.

Japan’s Keisuke Honda and Korea’s Jiseob Lim had engaged in a pitcher’s duel for most of the game with Honda working eight innings and registering 12 strikeouts, while Lim was on the mound for nine innings and had seven strikeouts.

Hiroaki Saiuchi was credited with the win, while Chaehueng Choi took the loss.

Mexico 15, Australia 8

Moises Gutierrez had a 3-run double and later added a 3-run homer to lead Mexico to a 15-8 win over Australia.

Molgado’s double cleared the bases in the top of the second as part of a 4-run inning that gave Mexico a 6-2 lead.

After Australia pulled within two runs of the lead, Molgado was at it again as he blasted a home run to put Mexico in front by five. Molgado finished with seven RBI.

Jose Grijalva Flores got the win for Mexico, while Australia starter Nicholas Veale suffered the loss.

In the Consolation Round, No. 7 Venezuela defeated No. 27 Argentina, 3-1.
