MONTERREY, Mexico – World No. 13 Australia kept their gold medal hopes alive as they came away with a 9-7 win over No. 3 Korea on the second day of Super Round action at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup® 2016.
Robbie Perkins hit a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the 7th that proved to be the difference. Perkins also had a two-run double that just missed being a home run in the 1st inning, as Australia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before adding two more in the 2nd inning.
Korea made things interesting as they scored four runs in the 3rd inning and then tied the game in the 5th inning.
Australia used five different pitchers with Joshua Guyer coming away with the win after 2 2/3 frames. Korea’s Sanghyun Jeong took the loss despite yielding just one earned run over four and third innings that included eight strikeouts.
Australia’s Guy Edmonds kept his strong tournament going driving in three runs while going 3-for-4.
