歷史

The Austrian Baseball Federation ABF was founded in 1983. As of 2016 there are 47 baseball clubs with about 5,800 members in Austria.   The first Baseball games in Austria were played during the Allied-occupation of Austria following World War 2 by members of the United States Forces in Austria. This development stopped when the occupation forces left Austria in 1955. In the early 1980ies Baseball resurfaced in Austria. In 1982 3 clubs existed in Vienna - Vienna Homerunners, Vienna Roadrunners and Vienna City Boys. Of these 3 clubs only the Vienna Homerunners still exist. In 1984 the first Austrian Championship was played with 4 teams coming from Vienna and Linz, Upper Austria. In 1988 the first Austrian team, the Vienna Homerunners participated at the European Cup in Antwerp, Belgium. Two years later, in 1990, the Austrian National Team saw its first participation at a Qualifier for the European Championship in Parma, Italy. One of the biggest successes came in 2007 when the Austrian National Team qualified for the European Championship in Barcelona, Spain, finishing at the 11th place. The greatest highlight in the history of Baseball in Austria was the participation at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2016. Nearly right from the beginning strong emphasis was placed on youth development and since 1992 Austrian Championships in the categories kids (under 10), juveniles (10-12), cadets (13-15) and juniors (16-18) are held each year. Furthermore, the ABF fosters the cooperation between schools and local clubs. Since 1993 Austrian National Teams have participated at numerous European Championships Juveniles (since 1996), Cadets (since 1997) and Juniors (since 1993), collecting a silver and bronze medal over the years. Softball has also a long running tradition in Austria. The first Austrian Softball championship has been played in 1991. Since 1997 the Austrian Softball National Team has participated at the European championship finishing in the 6th place in 2013 and 2015. Austria has also played at two Softball World Championships, 1994 in St. John's, Canada and 2016 in Surrey, Canada. At the 2016 World Championship the Austrian Softball National Team finished in 18th place, the biggest success of Softball Austria so far.  Austria has also been host to more than 20 European Championships and European Cup tournaments. The biggest events so far were the Qualifier for the European Championship Baseball in 1998 which saw the participation of 15 teams and the European Championship Softball Junior Girls in 2010 also with 15 participating teams. In 2013 and 2015 Vienna hosted the European Championship Baseball B-Pool, the finals drawing more than 1,000 spectators each time.
