The German Baseball and Softball Federation (DBV) was founded on December 5, 1950 as Amateur Baseball Federation Germany and renamed toits current name in 1980. The DBV is the governing body for baseball and softball in Germany separated into nine regional federations. Baseball became popular in Germany after the second world war, first mainly in parts, which were occupied by the United States. For 20 years baseball was on the rise, but in the 1970ies the sport nearly died due to a lack of organization and youth development. This changed in the beginning of the 1980ies with the re-establishment of the DBV, which then saw a growing numbers of players and clubs. The German Basebaii-Bundesliga was founded in 1984. The German Baseball National Teams have won one silver and seven bronze medals at European Championships. They participated in five Baseball World Cups and two World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, as weil as the Olympie Qualifying Tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the youth level the biggest success for German Baseball National Teams were winning the 2015 U15 European Championship and the 2016 U12 European Championship. ln Fastpitch Softball Germany's Women's National Team has reached the top five at European Championship three times in the history of the tournament, while the junior national team captured two silver medals.
