Seoul (Korea) – The third day of the IBAF XXV 18U Baseball World Championship in Korea put Italy in front of Canada. The protagonists of a resounding victory against Japan 24 hours before, repeated the success the hardest way, scoring tie and winning runs in the ninth against a Team Italy, which was focused and effective staying on top for the whole game.

The Azzurri put runners on first and second in the first two innings, without finding the winning hit to score against Jacob Marks, but a careful Paolo Taschini was not far behind, and solved difficult situations with men on third with a strikeout, then with an easy popout.

Italy scored in the third, with an RBI single by Alberto Mineo, who was also the third out, at home, to close the offense after Maestri’s basehit to the right field, perfectly played by Morgan.

In the bottom of the inning came a walk to Triolo, a balk that took him into second and an error by Mercuri that put runners at the corners, but also three strikeouts with which Taschini gave an end to the white-red offense.

Italy got the second run in the fourth, out of an error by Marks.

It was with one out and runners at the corners, a double by Triolo and walk to Robson, that Anselmi relieved Taschini, allowing the first Canadian run, out of a single by Kyle Hann, then a great play by Mercuri to Anselmi covering third and a strikeout kept the Italians on top.

After walking Maestri and a first ball on Boniardi, it was time to leave the field for Marks, replaced by Brock Dykxhoorn. Boniardi still got the walk, Calasso executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and Gasparini hit a sacrifice fly to center that sent Italy ahead 3-1.

Triolo opened the seventh Canadian attack with a single, then the Italian defense messed up on the short grounder by Robson and Hann put on the ground a perfect bunt. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch made it a one-run game.

Canada tied and won the game in the ninth. Triolo opened with a double, followed by a single by Robson which took him to third with two outs in a row, but Spiwak’s infield hit to Calasso generated both the tie and the error which allowed Spiwak to get to third, ready to score the winning 4-3 out of the single by Siddall.
