Seoul (Korea). Fans at the XXV 18U Baseball World Championship saw exciting games on the second day of first-round play on Saturday. In the morning Canada celebrated a second straight walk-off win at Mokdong, coming back against a strong Italian team, scoring the winning run in the ninth. Nearly at the same time Australia erased a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth, before falling down to Venezuela in the tenth.

In the afternoon at Jamsil, host Korea won a 3:45h game against the United States, crucially sparked by a bases clearing double in the sixth. In the evening at the same Stadium a Koshien star fulfilled expectations to lead Japan to a two-hit shutout over defending champion Chinese Taipei. In the other games Panama got their second win over the Czech Republic and Colombia scored early in a win over the Netherlands.

Group A:

Australia 3 – Venezuela 6

Venezuela captured its first win on the morning at Jamsil Stadium. They blew a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, but managed to prevail 6-3 against Australia in ten innings. The team from Down Under tied the contest on a bases loaded walk by Robbie Perkins, but gave it away thanks to a series of wild pitches and an error a couple of minutes later. Both teams are now 1-1 in Group B in first-round play.

Colombia 9 – Netherlands 6

Colombia scored eight runs in the first two innings to defeat the Netherlands 9-6 at Mokdong Stadium in the afternoon. The Dutch team tried to come back, but it was too little to erase the big deficit. Yair Morelos and Christian Cano finished the game with two RBI apiece. Both teams combined for eight errors. It is the first win for Colombia at the tournament, while the Netherlands lost the second day in a row.

Korea 8 – USA 2

Korea stunned Team USA 8-2 on Saturday afternoon at Jamsil Stadium to earn their second win in as many games. The host kept the opposing bats cold all game, after the Americans had scored 17 runs on Friday. They took the lead in the third and never looked back, blowing the contest open with four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a Dae Young Song three-run double, turning a one-run gap into a commanding lead. The United States dropped to 1-1 in the tournament.

Group B:

Canada 4 – Italy 3

Against a strong Italian team Canada came through with another walk-off win, scoring tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth to prevail 4-3. They turned around a 1-3 deficit, as Paolo Taschini and Davide Anselmi had dominated them through six-plus innings on the mound. Brett Siddall had the decisive two-out hit. Italy dropped to 0-2.

Chinese Taipei 0 – Japan 2

Scouts and general managers of professional leagues MLB, NPB and KBO witnessed another gem by Koshien phenom Shintaro Fujinami. The right-hander threw his third consecutive two-hit complete game shutout in ten days, leading Japan to a 2-0 shutout over defending champion Chinese Taipei, which itself received a masterpiece from their starter Hsin Chi Hung. Fujinami struck out 13, facing just four batters over the minimum. Runs in the second and the seventh provided the run support. The potential tying run for Chinese Taipei was thrown out at the plate in the sixth. Both teams are 1-1 in the tournament.

Czech Republic 2 – Panama 6

Panama completed their European leg in Group B with their second victory. They captured a 6-2 victory over the Czech Republic in the evening game at Mokdong. A 3-for-3 performance by Anthony Diaz at the plate and seven strong innings by Peter Pineda lifted the Central Americans to the win. Czech hurlers Jan Novak and Vojtech Dedek gave their team the chance to stay in the game, but their offense managed just two runs, as they suffered their second loss.
