Japan vs. USA for Gold at Women’s Baseball World Cup

Edmonton (Canada). The semi-finals at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton on Saturday lacked some drama, but delivered a matchup of two-time title holders. Defending champion Japan will meet with the United States in the Gold Medal Game on Sunday at 5pm local time. The game will be streamed live on YouTube. At 1pm Canada faces Australia in the Bronze Medal Game.

Defending champion Japan will meet with the United States in the Gold Medal Game on Sunday at 5pm local time. The game will be streamed live on YouTube. At 1pm Canada faces Australia in the Bronze Medal Game.

Japan ousted Australia 5-1 in the afternoon thanks to a solid pitching performance and timely hits by the offense. In the evening Team USA destroyed Canadian pitching to reach the final with a blowout win. Earlier on the day the classification round also started with Chinese Taipei and Venezuela fulfilling their favored roles en route to the game for fifth place. The Netherlands and Cuba will play the game for seventh place.

Classification Round:

Chinese Taipei 7 – Netherlands 5

Chinese defeated the Netherlands by a score of 7-5 on Saturday morning at Telus Field, opening the classification round of the tournament. The Dutch team was up to par in the game. They led 2-0 and 5-3 in the game, but failed to score more, giving away the advantage with a couple of errors and ended up with another loss.

Venezuela 9 – Cuba 6

Venezuela came back from a 0-5 deficit to down Cuba 9-6 at John Fry Park on Saturday afternoon. Kelyn Mendoza had a bases clearing double during a six-run rally to turn the score around. She finished the day with five RBI to lead the South Americans to the win.

Semi-Finals:

Japan 5 – Australia 1

Japan is back in the Gold Medal Game. They defeated Australia 5-1 in the first semi-final at Telus Field on Saturday afternoon. The Aussies struck first, but Japan’s offense answered right away to storm away with the victory. Three runs in the third and two in fifth sealed the deal. Yukari Isozaki went the distance for Japan, allowing just one run on eight hits and no walks through seven innings. She struck out three and gave up just one extra base hit all game.

Canada 4 – USA 17

USA dismantled Canada 17-4 in the second semi-final en route to the Gold Medal Game on Sunday. The US squad scored seven runs in the second and eight in the sixth to turn the contest into a blowout. Malaika Underwood, who started the scoring with her run in the second, went 5-for-5 with a triple, a double, four runs scored and three RBI. Stacy Piagno retired 15 of the first 17 batters she faced to earn the win.
