The Netherlands stunned Cuba with a 10-8 win on Sunday morning at Telus Field in Edmonton to claim seventh place in the final standings of the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. It is the first victory for the Dutch team internationally or any European team. They scored three runs on a double by Galieth Haaker in the top of the seventh inning to erase a one-run deficit en route to a dramatic victory.

It was a back and forth battle between teams, which had just met on Friday. The Dutch struck first in the opening frame, but Cuba answered with five runs. In the fourth and fifth the Netherlands erased a 3-6 deficit by scoring two runs apiece. But they couldn’t hold on to the lead, when Cuba scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. They had one chance left to go at bat and used it.

The Netherlands loaded the bases with one out and Galieth Haaker came through with a long double down the left field line into the Cuban bullpen to drive in three to get up in front 10-8. In the bottom half, the baseball powerhouse put Nilza Rodriguez on first with a one-out bunt single. Virgin Vargas followed and grounded into a game-ending 3-6 double play, starting the Dutch celebrations.
