MONTERREY, Mexico – Undefeated nations met Tuesday afternoon – the final day of the Opening Round –to decide the Group A and B winners of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup® 2016, as five of the six spots in the Super Round have now been claimed.

Training 4-1 in the bottom of the 9th inning, world No. 15 Panama came back to defeat No. 3 Korea in an electric Group A decider Tuesday afternoon.  World No. 1 Japan beat No. 15 Australia to earn the top spot in Group B.  No. 18 Nicaragua claimed its place in the Super Round after clinching 3rd Place in Group B with a win over No. 27 Argentina.

Panama 5, Korea 4

In what will be remembered as a classic battle, Panama scored four runs in the bottom of the 9th, receiving a double from Ibrahim Dayan McKenzie Guerrero that scored Gerald Josymar Chin Dixon, to give Panama the 5-4 walk-off win.

Chin Dixon was on second after doubling in two runs to pull Panama even.

Korea had broken a 1-1 tie in the 8th inning on Taehun Lee’s 2-run home run before they added another in the 9th to go up 5-1.

Panama’s Hector Jose Salazar Vega earned the win after entering the game to pitch in the 9th, while Korea’s Jinsu Byeon suffered the loss.

The loss spoiled a terrific start from Korea’s Chaehueng Choi who struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings on the mound, while yielding just one run.

Carlos Luis Sanchez Pinto hit a solo home run for Panama in the 2nd inning.

Nicaragua 6, Argentina 0

Walter Rodolfo Lopez struck out nine batters over six shutout innings to lead Nicaragua (3-2) to a 6-0 win over Argentina (1-4).

Cesar Javier Diaz Molina’s RBI double in the 4th gave Nicaragua all of the offense they would need as he went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Nicaragua reliever Wilfredo Ricardo Piner Hammer tossed two scoreless innings before Darrel William Leiva Zelaya came on for the ninth as Nicaragua limited Argentina to just five hits.

Argentina starter Nicolas Coria took the loss.

Japan 11, Australia 2

Yusuke Masago and Takumi Miyoshi both homered to lead Japan (5-0) to an 11-2 win over previously unbeaten Australia (4-1).

Japan received contributions up and down their lineup including nine-hole hitter Ryota Yoshimochi who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Japan sent starting pitcher Taiga Kashara to the mound and he delivered striking out nine batters over six and two-thirds innings of work to earn the win.

Australia starter Joshua Hendrickson took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings on the mound.
