GIJANG, Korea – Trailing 3-2 with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Venezuela National Team clean-up hitter Osmari Garcia hit a 2-run single up the middle to complete a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Chinese Taipei in the bronze medal game of the LG Presents WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup. Garcia’s bronze-medal-winning-hit was stopped by a diving shortstop, Yu-Ying Hsieh, who passed the ball to second baseman Yu-Hsuan Chen for the force out, but it was not in time and Maigleth Torres raced to home plate from second base, just ahead of Chen’s throw home.
The bronze medal is the best-ever finish for Venezuela Women’s National Baseball Team.
Behind a dominating performance of starting pitcher Ya-Che Hsu, Chinese Taipei entered the final inning with a 3-0 lead, but was tagged with the loss.
Venezuela starting pitcher Maria Rincon was credited with the win.
