U-15 Baseball World Cup: Cuba sweeps Group B, Brazil beats China to stay in hunt for Super Round

Cuba wins Group A, while Brazil (2-2) remains in contention to finish among the top three in Group A and qualify for the Super Round.

DAVID/CHITRÉ, Panama – Defending U-15 Baseball World Cup champions Cuba finished with a perfect 5-0 record to win Group B, shutting out Australia, 10-0, Tuesday morning, while world No. 19 Brazil edged No. 22 China, 2-1, to move to 2-2 in Group A.

Brazil (2-2) remains in contention to finish among the top three in Group A and qualify for the Super Round.

Cuba 9, Australia 3

Luis Estacholi Piedra smacked a two-run homer as part of a three-run bottom of the fifth to lead Cuba to a 9-3 win over Australia.

Cuba jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings on the strength of a four-run second inning that included three hits, two walks and two errors.

Edgar Quero Aguila led Cuba’s ten hit attack with a 3-for-3 game at the plate that included an RBI double in the fifth.

Australia’s three-run fourth inning was highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Jamie Fox.

Cuba relief pitcher Eccel Correa Viamonte tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win while Australia’s Riley Yeatman suffered the loss.

Brazil 2, China 1

Kawan Silva De Araujo turned in a splendid performance on the mound to lead Brazil to a 2-1 win over China.

De Araujo threw six innings and allowed just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four to pick up the win while Pedro Lemos Da Costa earned the save.

Lemos Da Costa got Brazil on the scoreboard in the third with an RBI single that tied the score before Felipe Koragi drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to put Brazil in front, 2-1.

China starter Lei Wang tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just one earned run but was tagged with the loss.
