World No. 6 Chinese Taipei upset top-ranked No. 1 USA Sunday morning, while No. 9 Netherlands cruised to a lopsided win against No. 26 South Africa to register Europe’s first victory in the global tournament.

DAVID/CHITRÉ, Panama – World No. 6 Chinese Taipei upset top-ranked United States to Sunday morning, while No. 9 Netherlands cruised to a lopsided win against No. 26 South Africa to register Europe’s first victory in the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2018.

Chinese Taipei 2, USA 1

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth allowed Kao-Hsiang Tsai to score the decisive run as Chinese Taipei handed USA their fist loss in the tournament.

Tsai led off the inning with a single to centre and moved to third on a double off the bat of Ying-Chieh Mao before USA pitcher Justin Colon hit Shan-Tsung Peng to load the bases.

Chinese Taipei had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth before USA fought back to tie the score in the top half of the sixth.

Peng was credited with the win after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while USA starter Joshua Hartle took the loss.

Both Chinese Taipei and the USA are 2-1 in Group A, setting up a potential log-jam on top of the standings.

Netherlands 18, South Africa 2

Donovan Antonia homered and Jesse Velders knocked in four runs as No. 9 Netherlands used 17 hits to score a convincing 18-2 win over No. 26 South Africa.

Philip Escreet tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch to give South Africa a 2-0 lead after one inning before the Netherlands took the lead in the second and scored in each subsequent inning.

Nine different batters from the Netherlands recorded hits with seven of them contributing multi-hit games including Jurrangelo Cijntje who went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs.

Netherlands starting pitcher Dorian Lippens tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and got the win while South Africa starter Taariq Adams suffered the loss.

With the victory, Netherlands moves to 1-2 in Group B, while South Africa drops to 0-3.
