In the last game of the Opening Round in Monteria, Puerto Rico defeated Australia by a score of 3-2. Isan Diaz homered twice to guide his team to victory.

Isan Diaz homered in his first two at bats to put Puerto Rico ahead in the score. The second baseman, belonging to the Miami Marlins organization (MLB), smashed two homers, in the third and fifth innings, to put his team in front. In the third episode he hit a solo homer to left field, while two innings later he found Gianpaul González on the basepaths and brought him with a long bomb to right field. Until that moment, the two home runs of Diaz were the only two hits of the Puerto Rican team.

Australia had secured the temporary tie in the bottom of the third inning with a double from Ulrich Bojarski to left field.

In the bottom of the seventh Australia scored again, thanks to an error by Puerto Rican pitcher Yelin Rodriguez. The Oceania team had put runners on the corners, and Jess Williams hit to the pitcher’s area. Rodriguez fielded the ball and assisted to second, but he missed the throw, allowing Bojarski to score from third.

Juan Echevarría entered to pitch for Puerto Rico, and already with the full bases struck out Samuel Kennelly and Zachary Shepherd to finish with the best opportunity of Australia to tie the game.

Both teams will start playing the Consolation ROund in Montería starting on Thursday.
