VIERA, Florida (USA)-The USSSA complex went through a 30 million US dollar renovation and is now ready to host the WBSC Women’s World Cup. USA baseball announced selection process for the hosts National Team

USA Baseball announced that the identification process for the Women’s National Team that will compete in the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2018 will begin with the Women’s National Open (8-10 June) at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The coaching staff will select 40 players for the trials that will take place immediately after (11-14 June) the National Open.

The final roster will be announced on Monday, 18 June, and the USA Women’s National Team will train from 11 to 15 August before moving to Viera, Florida, for the Women’s Baseball World Cup.

“We are thrilled that the WBSC awarded the 2018 Women’s Baseball World Cup to the United States,” said Paul Seiler, Executive Director and CEO of USA Baseball. “We cannot wait to not only showcase women’s baseball in our country, but also for our Women’s National Team to compete for a gold medal on our home soil for the first time.”

The WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2018 will be played in the former Space Coast Stadium complex, that is being redeveloped by the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) in a US$ 30 million project, 10 covered from revenue generated by Brevard County’s 5 percent Tourism Development Tax on hotel rooms and other short term rentals. Kevin Reynolds, general manager of the complex, expects to host 45 to 50 weekend or weeklong events a year in the near future.

In total, the complex will have 15 fields with artificial turf and lights. The fields can be adjusted using portable outfield fences. The complex will have sophisticated scoreboards, video facilities for live online broadcast of games and equipment to track the speed of pitches.

“This is just a dream come true,” USSSA Chairman, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Don DeDonatis said to the Brevard County press during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Renovation is almost complete, since the first event will start on January 12, 2018.

The Space Coast Stadium complex previously was the Spring Training home of 3 different Major League Baseball (MLB) teams: the Florida Marlins (1994-2002), the Montreal Expos (2003-2004) and the Washington Nationals (2005-2016). The Nationals lef the complex as they moved their operations to West Palm Beach. The complex was also the home of the Class A Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Brevard County Manatees (1994-2016), which moved to Kissimmee and were renamed the Florida Fire Frogs.

Team USA is a 2 time World Champion: 2004 in Edmonton (Canada) and 2006 in Taipei City (Taiwan). Japan won the last 5 editions of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup.
