LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) today announced the launch of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup® 2018 Trophy Tour, which will visit six U.S. cities and five Major League Baseball (MLB) ballparks before arriving on Florida’s Space Coast in Viera for the start of the biggest event in women’s baseball on 22 August.

As part of the tour festivities, the Official Promotional Video, “To Crown the Queens of Baseball,” has been unveiled for the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2018. Within the first 24 hours of the video’s release, it has generated over 250,000 views and over 14,000 likes and shares across WBSC social media channels, making it the most engaging WBSC post in 2018 to date.

The trophy tour will begin tomorrow at the Coronado Theatre in Rockford, Illinois, at the 75th anniversary celebration of the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The Peaches were featured in the 1992 movie, “A League of Their Own.” Women’s baseball pioneer Ila Borders and MLB Senior Vice-President for Baseball Operations Kim Ng are among featured guests scheduled to be in Rockford.

The WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup trophy will then be showcased at five MLB stadiums in July and August, including the homes of the Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Florida Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves:

  • 07 Jul: Nationals vs. Marlins at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
  • 13 Jul: Mets vs. Nationals at Citi Field, Queens, New York
  • 15 Jul: Marlins vs. Phillies at Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
  • 03 Aug: Rays vs. White Sox at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
  • 13 Aug: Braves vs. Diamondbacks at The Battery Atlanta at SunTrust Park, Atlanta, Georgia

WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari said: “This is the first-ever celebration of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Trophy Tour, and the first time this World Cup is to be played in the United States. The trophy tour’s six destinations will help build national excitement among sports fans and shine the biggest spotlight ever on the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2018 and women’s baseball in general. This prestigious trophy tour would not be possible without the support of Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism, Major League Baseball and its Clubs, and USSSA.”

Tony Reagins, Executive Vice President of Baseball & Softball Development, Major League Baseball said: “The timing of this trophy tour aligns nicely with the launch of Major League Baseball’s inaugural ‘Girls Baseball Breakthrough Series’ in partnership with USA Baseball this weekend. This development-focused camp is another step in the right direction for our sport — a direction that has, in many ways, been spearheaded by events like the Women’s Baseball World Cup. We know that girls all across the world will become inspired by watching these great players this summer, which we hope continues the impressive growth of our sport.”

“USA Baseball has prided itself on providing an avenue for women to play baseball through the inception of our Women’s National Team program in 2004,” said USA Baseball Executive Director and CEO, Paul Seiler. “This World Cup Trophy Tour will create unique awareness on the incredible female athletes from around the globe who will join together to compete for the title of World Champion in Viera in August.”

Eric Garvey, the Executive Director of Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism, said: “The Space Coast community looks forward to following the trophy tour this summer as anticipation builds for the first WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup in the United States. Viera and the entire Space Coast are ready to welcome guests from around the world for this historic baseball event.”

The Official Trophy of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup (51 cm. high; 20 cm. diameter) was custom designed and produced by Fratelli Pazzaglia in Pisa, Italy, based on the Official Look and brand identity of the Women’s Baseball World Cup, which was developed by the same mega-event branding agency that has rolled out the look of some of the world’s biggest international sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup.

Twelve nations across five continents will send their top players and National Teams to the VIII WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2018 in Viera: Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Hong Kong, Japan (5x Defending World Champions), Republic of Korea, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela.
