Italy beat Venezuela, 3-1, at the end of game bothered by rain. The azzurre improved to a 3-3 record and will play China on Wednesday, 8 August. A win would mean a spot in the top 8 of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship.

Ilaria Cacciamani was off a wild start and walked three in a row after Eila Valero led off with a single. This gave Venezuela and early lead and took Greta Cecchetti in the game with only one out in the bottom of the first.

Italy struck right back in the top of the second. With one out, Priscilla Brandi and Lara Cecchetti hit back to back singles. Alessandra Rotondo reached on a bunt and pinch runner Veronica Comar, who had taken over for Brandi, tied the game. Laura Vigna singled through the left side and Lara Cecchetti scored the go ahead run. Rotondo reached third on the play. As Vigna stole second, Rotondo went too far from the bag and was picked off by catcher Cristina Rodriguez. Venezuela’s starter Desiree Ibarra got out of the inning with no further damage.

Italy added a run in the top of the third. Erika Piancastelli doubled and reached third as Marta Gasparotto grounded out. Giulia Longhi followed with an RBI single that sent Ybarra to the showers. Venezuela gave the call to Michelle Floyd.

Greta Cecchetti cruised through Venezuela’s line up until the fourth, when she needed some help from her defense. Pimentel Belisario tried to reach home on a base hit by Fernanda Pacheco, but a perfect throw by center fielder Laura Vigna gave plenty of time to Marta Gasparotto to tag Belisario for the third out.

It turned out to be a key play for Italy. Greta Cecchetti mastered the last three at bats by Venezuela, allowing only a base hit and earned a well deserved win.
